Before the general election members of the Greener UK coalition supported the campaign for all main party leaders to take part in a televised climate and nature debate.
A letter was published in The Times on Monday 18 November, signed by 12 Greener UK partners, supporting a debate and calling for all party leaders to take part.
A leaders debate - 'Emergency on Planet Earth' - was subsequently held by Channel 4 News on 28 November, in which Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Green Party, the SNP and Plaid Cymru participated. As a party leaders debate specifically addressing the climate and nature crisis, it was a world-first.
The hour-long debate proved constructive and good tempered, covering a range of policies. While the debate mostly examined climate change, the producers allocated a specific question to biodiversity, and the theme and role of nature appeared throughout. More widely, the hosting of the debate proved that the environment is now seen as a central election issue.
The debate can be watched back here.
